The breeders at femkerun

We are empty nesters living in Poway, near San Diego. We were born in the Netherlands, where I grew up with several dogs, including a Drentsche Patrijshond named Juulke. I cared for and loved Juulke throughout her life. So, when I was finally able to have a dog in the United States, I knew I wanted another “Drent.” As luck would have it, there was one litter in Arizona that year, and we brought home our puppy, Femke.

The desire to breed Femke arose early. Maintaining a sufficiently large breeding population is extremely important for genetic diversity, and introducing genes from Dutch males is crucial to preserving the health of the small Drent population in the United States. Because my extended family lives in the Netherlands, it will be relatively easy for me to take Femke there for breeding. In fact, during a recent visit, we were fortunate enough to meet several potential stud dogs. We selected E-pica based on his happy temperament, strong working-dog build, and excellent conformation record.

As a breeder, I intend to promote the Drent as an ideal cooperative hunting and working dog. Most Drents demonstrate a very strong drive in the hunting field—or in other activities, such as tracking, trailing, and scent detection—while also being cooperative and well-mannered, provided, of course, that they are properly trained and kept mentally and physically engaged. This is a rare combination in a pointing breed.

We breed to help ensure that the Drent does not become extinct and that future generations can continue to enjoy these very special dogs. Femke is both an enjoyable companion and a reliable working dog, and I select mates that possess the same qualities. The puppies are not bred to specialize in a single area; rather, I expect them to be excellent all-around working dogs and companions.
